Swedish Stocks Close Lower as Industrial and Materials Shares Decline

Swedish stocks finished Thursday's trading session in negative territory, with the benchmark OMX Stockholm 30 index falling 0.41%. The decline was primarily driven by broad-based weakness in cyclical sectors, particularly basic materials and industrials, according to market data from Investing.com.
Sector Weakness Drives Market Lower
Losses were concentrated in the Basic Materials, Industrials, and Consumer Goods sectors, setting a negative tone for the market. Overall market breadth confirmed the bearish sentiment, with falling stocks outnumbering advancing ones on the Stockholm Stock Exchange by a margin of 454 to 277, while 68 stocks ended unchanged.
The session's worst-performing blue-chip stocks included several major industrial and mining companies:
- Boliden AB (ST:BOL), the metals and mining group, saw its shares fall 4.27%.
- Epiroc AB (ST:EPIRa), a provider of mining equipment, declined 3.68%.
- Sandvik AB (ST:SAND), an engineering group, dropped 2.19%.
Bright Spots in Telecom and Pharma
Despite the broader market downturn, some large-cap stocks posted gains, helping to limit the index's losses. The telecommunications and healthcare sectors showed notable resilience.
AdKey outperformers on the OMX Stockholm 30 included:
- Telia Company AB (ST:TELIA), which rose 1.77%.
- AstraZeneca PLC (ST:AZN), the pharmaceutical giant, which added 1.45%.
- Nordea Bank Abp (ST:NDASE) also ended higher, gaining 1.12%.
Currency and Commodity Markets
In the currency markets, the Swedish krona weakened against major currencies. The EUR/SEK pair rose 0.77% to 11.23, while the USD/SEK pair climbed 0.81% to 9.66, indicating a weaker krona. This coincided with a 0.10% rise in the US Dollar Index Futures.
Commodity markets experienced significant moves. Crude oil futures for October delivery surged 5.55% to $101.38 a barrel, while Brent oil futures rose 5.49%. In contrast, gold futures for December delivery fell 1.17% to trade at $4,408.42 a troy ounce.
