Background

Bitcoin edged higher on Tuesday but remained confined to a narrow trading range as one of its largest corporate holders, Strategy Inc., disclosed another significant sale from its treasury reserves.

As of 02:29 ET (06:29 GMT), Bitcoin was up 1.8% to trade at $63,755.1, having briefly surpassed the $64,000 mark earlier in the session, according to data from Investing.com.

Strategy Pares Bitcoin Holdings

Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR) revealed in a Monday disclosure that it sold 1,683 Bitcoin for approximately $104.7 million last week. This marks the third such sale by the company, reducing its total holdings to 842,138 coins.

The sale follows the company's recent second-quarter earnings report, which included a larger-than-expected loss. The loss was primarily driven by unrealized losses on its Bitcoin holdings, as the company's average purchase price of $75,419 per coin remains substantially higher than current market prices.

Investor sentiment across the cryptocurrency sector remains cautious, contributing to the market's tight trading range. Recent underwhelming earnings from crypto exchange Coinbase Global Inc. (NASDAQ:COIN) have added to the reserved mood.

Market participants are also contending with the fallout from a high-profile security breach. A recent hack on the cold wallets of Canadian firm Coinkite, which resulted in the theft of nearly $90 million in Bitcoin, has raised concerns about the security of even the most protected storage methods.

Altcoins See Modest Gains

Broader cryptocurrency prices saw slight increases on Tuesday, moving in line with Bitcoin. Key altcoin movements included:

  • Ether (ETH): Rose 0.7% to $1,856.84
  • XRP: Increased 0.5% to $1.0738
  • Cardano (ADA): Rallied 6.6%
  • Solana (SOL): Gained 1.2%
