Star Entertainment Stock Jumps 13% on Return to Quarterly Profitability

Shares of Star Entertainment surged after the casino operator reported its first quarterly profit in nearly a year, a result driven by cost-saving initiatives and resilient performance at its key properties. The company's stock closed 13% higher on Tuesday, providing some relief to investors amid ongoing regulatory challenges.
First-Quarter Turnaround
Star Entertainment posted consolidated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of A$12 million ($8.42 million) for the three months ending September 30, according to a company announcement. This marks a significant turnaround from the A$13 million loss reported in the same period a year ago and is the company's first profit since the second quarter of fiscal 2026.
Consolidated revenue for the quarter rose 2% year-over-year to A$284 million. The company's casinos in Sydney and the Gold Coast were the primary drivers of this performance, accounting for more than 98% of the total revenue.
Market Reaction and Outlook
Investors responded positively to the news, sending shares of the Australian firm to a three-week high. The stock closed at A$0.135 after surging as much as 26.1% during the session.
AdWhile the results were welcomed, one analyst characterized them as a "relief but not a 'clean bill of health,'" according to Philip Deloughery, head of equities at MPC Markets. He added that the positive earnings help to quell immediate concerns about the company's financial longevity.
In a forward-looking statement, CEO Bruce Mathieson Jr. said the company now expects to "start building cash reserves in FY27, before non-operating items." Star reported A$239 million in cash and cash equivalents as of September 30.
Regulatory Headwinds Remain
Despite the improved financial performance, Star Entertainment continues to navigate significant regulatory hurdles. The company reiterated that the licence for its flagship Sydney casino remains suspended.
Furthermore, the appointment of a manager to oversee the Sydney property has been extended to June 30, 2027, underscoring the long-term nature of the regulatory oversight the firm faces.
