S&P/TSX Composite Falls 0.60% as Tech and Industrial Stocks Decline

Canada's main stock index, the S&P/TSX Composite, finished lower on Wednesday, dragged down by notable declines in the technology and industrial sectors. The benchmark index fell 0.60% by the close of trading in Toronto, according to data from Investing.com.
Market Performance
The negative sentiment was widespread across the Toronto Stock Exchange, where falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 565 to 418, with 64 issues ending the session unchanged.
Reflecting the cautious mood, the S&P/TSX 60 VIX, a key measure of market volatility expectations, climbed 2.66% to 14.68. An increase in this index typically signals rising investor uncertainty.
Sector and Stock Movers
The day's losses were heavily concentrated in the Information Technology, Clean Technology, and Industrials sectors. Technology heavyweight Shopify Inc. (TSX:SHOP) was among the worst performers on the index, falling 5.35%.
Other notable decliners included:
Ad- Bird Construction Inc. (TSX:BDT), which dropped 4.61%.
- MDA Ltd. (TSX:MDA), which decreased by 4.30%.
Bucking the downward trend, North West Company Inc. (TSX:NWC) was a standout gainer, rising 7.84%. Lithium Americas Corp. (TSX:LAC) also saw strong buying interest, closing up 6.52%.
Commodities Rally
The decline in the broader equity index occurred despite a strong rally in energy markets, a key component of the Canadian economy. Crude oil for October delivery surged 3.94% to $96.70 a barrel, while the November Brent contract rose 3.77% to $101.61 a barrel.
Elsewhere in commodities, gold futures saw a marginal gain of 0.04%. The Canadian dollar was relatively stable against its U.S. counterpart.
