Background

Australia's benchmark stock index, the S&P/ASX 200, finished the trading session higher, gaining 0.50% on the back of a rally in the resource sectors. The positive close was accompanied by a significant drop in market volatility, suggesting increased investor confidence.

Market Performance

The S&P/ASX 200 advanced as gains in key sectors outweighed losses elsewhere. Market breadth was positive, with data from the Sydney Stock Exchange showing 597 stocks rising compared to 444 declining, while 384 ended the session unchanged.

Reflecting the calmer market sentiment, the S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of the index's options, fell sharply by 8.82% to 10.44. This marked a new three-month low for the volatility gauge, often referred to as the market's "fear index."
