S&P/ASX 200 Closes Down 0.75% on Broad-Based Sector Weakness

Summary
Australia's benchmark stock index fell 0.75% on Friday, dragged lower by losses in the mining, technology, and gold sectors amid weakening commodity prices and rising market volatility.
Australian equities finished the week on a down note, with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index falling 0.75% by the close of trade in Sydney on Friday. The decline was driven by broad-based selling pressure, with notable weakness in the Gold, IT, and Metals & Mining sectors.
Sector and Stock Performance
The negative sentiment was widespread across the market, as falling stocks outnumbered advancers on the Sydney Stock Exchange by a margin of 748 to 327, with 365 issues ending unchanged. The session's worst performers were concentrated in the resources and capital management spaces.
Key stock movements included:
- Centuria Capital Ltd (ASX:CNI) plunged 8.18% to A$1.46, hitting a 52-week low.
- ALS Ltd (ASX:ALQ) declined 7.27% to end the day at A$20.53.
- Liontown Resources Ltd (ASX:LTR) fell 7.23% to close at A$1.19.

Volatility Rises as Commodities Weaken
Investor uncertainty appeared to be on the rise, as reflected by the S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of index options. The VIX jumped 6.88% to 11.69, indicating increased market anxiety.
The weakness in resource-linked stocks coincided with a dip in commodity prices. Gold Futures for August delivery were down 0.30%, while Crude oil for September delivery fell 0.93% to $91.33 a barrel. The global benchmark Brent oil contract for September also slipped 0.76% to trade at $99.92 a barrel.
