Background

Spain's benchmark stock index, the IBEX 35, ended Wednesday's trading session down 1.58%, reaching its lowest point in a month. The decline was broad-based, with significant losses registered in the Consumer Goods, Telecommunications & IT, and Building & Construction sectors, according to closing data from Madrid.

Market Performance

The negative sentiment was widespread across the Madrid Stock Exchange, where falling stocks significantly outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 148 to 43, with 17 issues ending the day unchanged. The sell-off pushed the main index to a fresh one-month low, signaling growing investor caution.

Leading the laggards were several major index components:

  • Amadeus IT (BME:AMA) was the worst performer, falling 4.28%.
  • Industria de Diseno Textil SA (BME:ITX), the parent company of Zara, declined 3.61%.
  • Fluidra (BME:FLUI) saw its shares drop by 3.56%.

Energy Sector Provides a Bright Spot

In contrast to the wider market trend, energy and utility stocks showed resilience. Oil and gas company Repsol (BME:REP) was the top performer on the index, rising 1.69% to close at an all-time high of 28.81. Other notable gainers included utility firm Endesa SA (BME:ELE), which added 1.01%.

Repsol's outperformance coincided with a strong rally in global energy markets. Crude oil for October delivery rose 3.77% to $96.54 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract gained 3.49% to trade at $101.34 a barrel. Elsewhere, currency markets were relatively calm, with the EUR/USD pair remaining mostly flat.
