SpaceX Weighting in Nasdaq-100 to More Than Double After Quarterly Rebalance

Summary
SpaceX's influence in the Nasdaq-100 is set to surge as its weighting will more than double to 2.82% following the index's quarterly rebalancing. The adjustment will compel passive funds tracking the benchmark to purchase billions of dollars in the company's stock.
SpaceX's weighting in the Nasdaq-100 index is set to more than double to 2.82% when the benchmark's quarterly rebalancing takes effect this Monday. The adjustment, based on Friday's closing prices, confirms previous estimates and will significantly increase the aerospace giant's influence within the widely followed index, according to a Bloomberg report citing data from the index provider.
Rebalancing Addresses Valuation Gap
The rebalancing will increase SpaceX's (SPCX) weighting from its current level of just 1.28%. This change is designed to better align the company's index representation with its massive market capitalization, which now exceeds $2 trillion.
The adjustment corrects a notable discrepancy. While SpaceX is the seventh-largest constituent in the index by market value, its current weighting does not even place it among the top 20. The initially low weighting was a result of a large number of locked-up shares following its July initial public offering, which limited its free-float availability.
Billions in Forced Buying Expected
The substantial increase in weighting will force passive investment funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the Nasdaq-100 to adjust their portfolios. This mechanical buying will require them to purchase billions of dollars worth of SpaceX stock to accurately mirror the index's new composition.
AdKey funds impacted by this rebalancing include:
- The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), one of the largest ETFs tracking the index with $482 billion in assets.
- A broader universe of over 200 investment products that track the Nasdaq-100, collectively managing more than $800 billion in assets.
Context of SpaceX's Inclusion
SpaceX was added to the index shortly after its IPO, benefiting from a Nasdaq rule change that allows for the early inclusion of newly public mega-cap companies without meeting the standard 10% minimum free-float requirement. The Nasdaq-100 comprises the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market and is a key benchmark for technology and growth stocks.
