South African Rand Strengthens as Gold Rally Offsets Weak Manufacturing Data

The South African rand strengthened on Thursday, buoyed by a significant rise in gold prices and a weaker U.S. dollar, which overshadowed a fresh report indicating deepening weakness in the nation's manufacturing industry.
Rand Rallies on Commodity Strength
The rand traded at 16.32 against the U.S. dollar as of 1524 GMT, a gain of approximately 0.6% from its prior closing level, according to Investing.com data. The currency's advance was primarily driven by external factors favorable to the resource-based economy.
Key drivers for the rand included:
- Gold Prices: The price of gold, one of South Africa's most important exports, climbed by more than 1%.
- U.S. Dollar: The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, edged down by 0.1%, providing a tailwind for emerging market currencies.
Weak Domestic Data Shrugged Off
AdInvestors appeared to look past concerning domestic economic indicators released the same day. Data from South Africa's statistics agency revealed that manufacturing output contracted by 4.3% year-on-year in May.
This marked a significant acceleration from the 2.9% year-on-year decline recorded in April, signaling persistent challenges within the country's industrial sector. However, the positive momentum from commodity markets was the dominant influence on currency traders for the session.
JSE Gains Ground
The positive sentiment extended to the local equity market. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange's Top-40 index closed the day up 1.1%. Mining stocks were noted as key contributors to the gains, reflecting the direct impact of higher commodity prices on corporate valuations.
