SK Hynix Shares Tumble on Macro Headwinds and Leveraged Exposure Warning

Shares of SK Hynix Inc. (KS:000660) tumbled 3.8% to close at ₩1,783,000 on Friday, caught in a broad market sell-off driven by mounting macroeconomic pressures. The decline in the major memory chip manufacturer's stock contributed significantly to a 2.4% drop in South Korea's benchmark KOSPI index.
Global Risk-Off Sentiment Hits Tech
The sell-off was triggered by a sharp deterioration in global risk appetite as key economic indicators flashed warning signs for investors. Surging energy prices, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures climbing above $102 per barrel, combined with rising borrowing costs, as the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield surpassed 4.95%.
This combination is particularly challenging for high-growth, rate-sensitive sectors like technology and semiconductors, as higher yields reduce the present value of future earnings. The downturn followed a weak U.S. session, where the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index posted a meaningful decline, signaling investor anxiety in the chip sector.
Central Bank Warning Amplifies Concerns
AdAdding to the selling pressure was a specific warning issued a day earlier by the Bank of Korea. The central bank flagged that concentrated positions from overseas hedge funds, leveraged ETFs, and total return swaps have created significant leveraged exposure in certain Korean equities, specifically identifying SK Hynix.
This structural vulnerability means that during periods of negative macro sentiment and foreign capital outflows, the stock is prone to sharper and more amplified price swings. The warning highlighted a risk factor that likely exacerbated Friday's decline.
Domestic Selling Reduces Support
Underlying buying support for the stock had also weakened recently. According to market data, domestic retail investors were net sellers of SK Hynix throughout the first ten days of September, offloading more than 8 trillion won worth of shares. This reduction in local demand removed a potential cushion against the wave of foreign-led selling.
