Background

Shares of SK Hynix Inc. surged on Tuesday following a South Korean newspaper report that the memory chipmaker is considering a special dividend of approximately 16 trillion won ($12 billion). The speculation sent the company's stock to its highest level in two weeks ahead of its third-quarter earnings announcement scheduled for Wednesday.

Market Reaction and Company Stance

In response to the report, SK Hynix shares climbed 7.14% to close at 1,366,000 won, their highest point since October 14. The rally significantly outpaced the broader market, with South Korea's KOSPI index rising 3.81% during the same trading session.

However, SK Hynix has not confirmed the dividend. In a regulatory filing on Monday, the company stated that while it is "reviewing various shareholder return measures to enhance shareholder value," no decisions had been finalized. The company added that any additional measures would be announced with its quarterly results, subject to board approval.

Details of the Reported Payout

The report, published by the Dong-A Ilbo newspaper on Monday, suggested the potential dividend could be funded by gains from SK Hynix's sale of its stake in Japanese memory chipmaker Kioxia. SK Hynix originally invested about 4 trillion won in Kioxia in 2018 as part of a consortium led by Bain Capital.

The potential payout comes as investors increase pressure on major chipmakers to distribute more cash. The sector has seen strong profits driven by soaring demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and other advanced chips essential for artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Context on Shareholder Returns

This development follows previous commitments by SK Hynix to boost shareholder value. In August, the company announced a significant capital return program that included:

  • A plan to buy back and cancel 40 trillion won worth of its own shares.
  • A commitment to allocate more than 50% of its free cash flow generated between 2025 and 2027 to shareholder returns.
