SK Hynix Shares Surge After BofA Upgrade on AI Memory Chip Demand

Shares of South Korean memory chipmaker SK Hynix Inc. jumped 4.7% to $194.18 in early trading, bucking a broader market downturn after Bank of America upgraded the stock and highlighted surging demand for artificial intelligence hardware.
Analyst Upgrade Cites AI Demand
Bank of America raised its rating on SK Hynix to "Buy" and set a new price target of $250, according to a note cited by Investing.com. The upgrade was driven by what the bank sees as accelerating demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, a critical component in AI accelerators.
The stock's move brought it close to its 52-week high of $194.80, reflecting renewed institutional investor confidence in the company's strong position in the high-margin HBM market.
Shareholder Returns and Industry Tailwinds
Investor sentiment was also bolstered by a landmark shareholder return program announced by SK Hynix in August. The plan includes the repurchase and cancellation of approximately 40 trillion South Korean won in stock, one of the largest such programs in the country's corporate history.
AdFurthermore, management has committed to returning over 50% of cumulative free cash flow to shareholders between 2025 and 2027. In the competitive landscape, recent reports that competitor Kioxia is raising NAND flash prices suggest a tightening supply environment, which could benefit major memory producers like SK Hynix.
Outperforming a Weaker Market
SK Hynix's strong performance came despite weakness in the overall market, underscoring the company-specific nature of the catalysts. On the same day, the S&P 500 fell 0.3%, the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.7% amid geopolitical tensions.
The combination of a high-conviction analyst upgrade, an ongoing aggressive capital return plan, and a structurally tightening market for AI memory chips propelled the stock higher against the negative market trend.
