SK hynix Leads Chip Sector Rally on AI Memory Shortage Warnings
Text size
Background

Shares of SK hynix Inc. surged in morning trading, driven by investor optimism ahead of its quarterly earnings report and stark analyst warnings about a worsening supply shortage for memory chips essential for artificial intelligence.

The stock climbed nearly 7.9% to $163.15 as investors anticipated a strong financial report, with the company's entire 2026 output of HBM, DRAM, and NAND chips reportedly sold out, according to Investing.com.

Analyst Warns of Worsening Supply Crunch

A key catalyst for the rally was a research note from Meritz Securities analyst Kim Sunwoo, who cautioned that DRAM suppliers are currently meeting only 75% to 80% of market demand. The note projected this fulfillment rate could deteriorate to as low as 60% by 2027.

This forecast reinforces previous public statements from SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung, who warned that 2027 could bring the most severe supply shortage in the memory industry's history. Other firms, including HSBC and Goldman Sachs, also offered supportive commentary, with Goldman attributing recent weakness in the sector to ETF-related selling rather than a decline in industry fundamentals.

The positive sentiment extended across the semiconductor industry, signaling a sector-wide catalyst. Other major memory chip manufacturers also posted significant gains in morning trading:

  • Micron Technology (MU) and Western Digital (WDC) each gained over 5%.
  • Seagate Technology (STX) and SanDisk also saw strong buying pressure.

The rally occurred against a constructive market backdrop, with the Nasdaq Composite gaining 0.8%, the S&P 500 up 0.5%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average adding 0.3%.

Context and Outlook

The gains come as SK hynix, the dominant global supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI accelerators, prepares to report its second-quarter 2026 earnings. The company recently debuted on the Nasdaq on July 10 through a record-setting $26.5 billion American Depositary Receipt (ADR) offering, and continues to attract significant investor interest amid the ongoing AI infrastructure buildout.
