Semiconductor Stocks Tumble While Select Tech, Biotech Names Surge in Volatile Session

Summary
Major semiconductor firms like SanDisk and Lam Research experienced a sharp sell-off on Monday, while several small- and mid-cap stocks, including Forte Biosciences, posted significant double-digit gains.
A sharp sell-off hit the semiconductor sector on Monday, with several industry giants seeing their market capitalizations shrink, while other pockets of the market experienced dramatic upward swings. The divergent performance saw mega-cap chipmakers decline, while certain smaller technology and biotech firms posted substantial gains.
Semiconductor Sector Under Pressure
The most significant downward pressure was concentrated in the mega-cap semiconductor space. According to market data from Monday's session, key industry players recorded notable losses:
- SanDisk Corp-Exch (SNDK): Tumbled 11.33%
- Lam Research Corp (LRCX): Fell 6.80%
- Applied Materials Inc (AMAT): Dropped 5.62%
Outside of the chip industry, space exploration firm SpaceX (SPCX) also saw a significant decline, falling 3.54%.
Dramatic Moves in Smaller Caps
AdVolatility was even more pronounced among smaller-capitalization stocks. Capricor Therapeutics (CAPR) plummeted 67.74%, marking one of the day's largest declines. Other notable small-cap losers included SNXX (SNXX), which fell 23.10%, and BCAR (BCAR), down 26.57%.
In contrast, several companies saw their valuations soar. Forte Biosciences (FBRX) was a top gainer, surging 39.54%. The move came as TD Cowen reportedly downgraded the stock's rating following news of an Argenx deal. Other strong performers included Trax (TRAX), which climbed 20.05%, and DPCM Capital (QBTS), which rose 15.67%.
Bright Spots in Large-Cap Tech
Despite the weakness in semiconductors, several large-cap technology and industrial firms bucked the trend to post solid gains. Energy technology company Baker Hughes (BKR) advanced 6.45%.
Software companies also performed well, with Atlassian Corp Plc (TEAM) rising 8.45% and enterprise software provider Workday Inc (WDAY) gaining 8.36%. These gains highlight the mixed sentiment across different market segments during the session.
