Saga Shares Surge After First-Half Profit Nearly Doubles, Guidance Raised

Summary
Shares in UK-based Saga PLC soared after the company reported a 98% jump in first-half profit and significantly raised its full-year earnings forecast, citing strong performance and reduced debt.
Shares of Saga PLC (SAGA.L) surged more than 10% after the UK-based company, which specializes in services for people over 50, announced a near-doubling of its first-half profit and upgraded its full-year financial guidance.
Profit Jumps on Broad Strength
In its interim results for the six months ending July 31, 2026, Saga reported a 98% increase in underlying pretax profit to £46.6 million, up from £23.5 million in the same period last year. The company's underlying revenue also climbed 14% to £366.3 million.
Saga attributed the strong performance to positive momentum across all three of its main business segments: Travel, Insurance, and Financial Services. The Travel division saw robust demand, with booked revenue for its Ocean Cruise unit up nearly 12% year-over-year as of late September, according to the report.
Upgraded Outlook and Deleveraging
AdBuoyed by the strong first half, Saga's management raised its full-year guidance for underlying pretax profit to a range of £65 million to £70 million, which it described as materially above its previous expectations. The company also suggested it could achieve its medium-term targets of at least £100 million in profit and a leverage ratio below 2x ahead of its January 2030 goal.
A key factor for investors was the improvement in the company's balance sheet. Saga reduced its net debt by £70.4 million during the period, bringing its leverage ratio down to 2.7 times. This reduction in gearing is seen as a crucial step in making the stock more appealing to institutional investors who may have been deterred by its previously high debt levels.
Market Reaction
The combination of soaring profits, an improved outlook, and a stronger balance sheet provided a compelling catalyst for investors. Saga's shares climbed 10.7%, trading as high as 730p during the session and approaching the stock's 52-week high of 747p. While the broader FTSE 250 index traded modestly higher, Saga's gains were driven overwhelmingly by its strong corporate results.
