Russia Strikes US-Owned Bunge Plant, Energy Sites in Escalating Economic War

Russian forces struck a major U.S.-owned agricultural facility and a petrol station in the capital on Thursday, signaling an intensified campaign against Ukraine's economic and logistics infrastructure. The attacks, which caused multiple casualties, are part of a broader escalation by Moscow targeting supply chains and key commercial assets, Ukrainian authorities reported.
Key Economic Targets Hit
In the southeastern city of Dnipro, an attack killed two people and wounded five others at a sunflower oil facility run by the global agribusiness company Bunge, according to local officials. The plant, one of Ukraine's five largest, has a processing capacity of 1,600 tons of oilseeds per day. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the strike as part of Moscow’s “systematic terror campaign against American businesses and economic interests.”
In Kyiv, a jet-powered drone struck a petrol station operated by state-owned energy company Ukrnafta, injuring four people, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Ukrnafta's CEO, Bohdan Kukura, stated on Facebook that there was “no military objective in such strikes,” calling it an act of “terror and intimidation of the civilian population.” The attack was reportedly the first of its kind on such a facility within the capital.
AdBroader Context and Implications
The strikes are part of a recent surge in attacks by both sides on economic targets aimed at disrupting war efforts. Russia has increasingly used ballistic missiles and drones to hit warehouses, food suppliers, and retail chains, while Ukraine has targeted Russian oil refineries and logistics hubs, according to reports.
Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi noted that Russian attacks on businesses and civilian infrastructure were “rapidly growing.” The targeting of a major Bunge facility directly impacts Ukraine's critical agricultural export sector. These attacks on energy and food infrastructure threaten to disrupt domestic fuel supplies and global food markets, compounding the economic pressure on Ukraine as it contends with air defense shortages.
