Russia Intensifies Economic Pressure with Drone Strikes on Kyiv's Logistics Hubs

Summary
Russian forces launched a second consecutive day of drone attacks on Ukraine's capital, targeting key commercial and logistics infrastructure in an apparent effort to disrupt the nation's economy and daily life.
Russia launched waves of drone attacks against Kyiv and the surrounding region for a second straight day on Friday, striking critical commercial and logistics infrastructure in what Ukrainian officials described as a campaign to paralyze the capital's economy.
Commercial Assets Targeted
The attacks inflicted significant damage on civilian and commercial properties, disrupting key supply chains. According to Ukrainian officials, the strikes hit warehouses, retail locations, and private homes.
- Fatalities and Damage: At least one person was killed outside Kyiv, Governor Tymur Tkachenko reported. He added that the attacks damaged 14 warehouse premises, 16 homes, and three apartment buildings.
- Major Retailers Hit: The strikes destroyed sorting centers for Ukraine's largest private courier, Nova Poshta, near Kyiv and in Sumy. In Zaporizhzhia, a drone struck an Epicenter home-improvement store, wounding at least four people, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov.
- Other Targets: A shopping center in Kharkiv was also attacked for the second time in two days, and a drone destroyed a major book retailer's warehouse in the Kyiv region.
Strategic Goal to 'Paralyse' Kyiv
AdUkrainian authorities believe the strikes are a deliberate attempt to wear down the population and cripple the country's economic resilience. The attacks caused widespread disruption, including significant train delays and prolonged air-raid alerts, which lasted for nearly 15 hours in Kyiv on Thursday.
"The enemy is launching small numbers of jet-powered UAVs in waves with the aim of paralysing Kyiv," said Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Centre for Countering Disinformation. He stated the goal is "to wear down the air defences and the population."
Context of Economic Warfare
The recent attacks are part of a broader escalation by both Russia and Ukraine, who have increasingly targeted consumer logistics and online retail infrastructure in recent weeks. These strikes aim to inflict economic damage and weaken the opposing side's war effort by disrupting the flow of goods and services essential for the civilian economy.
