Russia Deploys Jamming Systems to Counter Starlink-Guided Ukrainian Drones

Background

Russian forces are escalating their efforts to counter Ukraine's effective "mid-strike" drone campaign by deploying sophisticated jamming systems and camouflaging military cargo, according to Ukrainian drone commanders and pilots. These Ukrainian drones, which often rely on Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet for guidance, have been used to successfully target Russian supply lines, fuel depots, and command centers far behind the front lines.

To disrupt these attacks, Russia has reportedly installed powerful electronic jammers near towns and military facilities. Ukrainian sources claim some of these systems are capable of destabilizing the Starlink connection. Serhii Beskrestnov, an advisor to Ukraine’s defense ministry, identified one such system as the Volna Kupol Garant, which he said can disrupt Starlink signals over an area of approximately 20 square kilometers. These jammers have become high-priority targets for Ukrainian forces, who have reportedly destroyed at least two of the installations.

In addition to electronic warfare, Russian forces are using deception to protect vital supplies. Ukrainian commanders told Reuters that military fuel has been discovered hidden in civilian vehicles, including water and milk tankers. Other tactics include moving fuel in small convoys protected by armed pickup trucks and transporting ammunition and provisions in small civilian cars, quadbikes, and motorcycles to avoid detection.

While Ukraine's mid-strike drone campaign has been described by some analysts as a significant battlefield development, Russia is actively adapting its strategies. Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, noted that if Russia scales up production of its jammers, it could make Ukraine's drone operations more difficult. The effectiveness of these countermeasures is still being tested, and Ukrainian drone missions continue despite the increased risks and occasional failures.
