Background

Roivant Sciences (ROIV) shares surged on Tuesday after the company announced its investigational drug, mosliciguat, met the primary endpoint in a mid-stage trial for patients with a specific type of high blood pressure affecting the lungs.

Positive Trial Data

The study focused on pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD), a condition where lung scarring damages blood vessels and increases strain on the heart. Roivant reported that in the 135-patient study, mosliciguat demonstrated a significant reduction in pulmonary vascular pressure and resistance compared to a placebo after 16 weeks of treatment.

Key findings from the trial include:

  • A 56.3% reduction in pulmonary vascular pressure and resistance versus placebo, meeting the study's primary endpoint.
  • Patients taking mosliciguat walked 35.2 meters farther than the placebo group in a six-minute walk test, a key secondary endpoint.

Market Reaction and Outlook

The positive results sent Roivant's stock price up by approximately 17% in trading. The news also drew a positive reaction from Wall Street, with JPMorgan analyst Brian Cheng designating the stock as a "top pick."

Cheng stated that the data suggests the drug's potential could significantly exceed his previous risk-adjusted peak sales forecast of $1.5 billion for the PH-ILD indication. Mayukh Sukhatme, Roivant's Chief Investment Officer, noted that the drug's long half-life implies patient benefits could increase with longer treatment durations. Sukhatme added that the company envisions mosliciguat as both a standalone treatment and part of a combination therapy regimen.

Expanding Late-Stage Pipeline

The successful trial adds to Roivant's recent momentum, strengthening its late-stage development pipeline. Just last month, the company secured U.S. regulatory approval for Lisraya, a treatment for certain skin and muscle diseases.

Sukhatme emphasized the high unmet need for patients with PH-ILD, who typically have short life expectancies. He said mosliciguat has the potential to offer "real relief" and help reduce the risk of "hospitalizations, worsening of the disease, and death."
