Rigetti Computing Secures $100 Million in CHIPS Act Funding for Quantum R&D

Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ:RGTI) has secured a $100 million funding agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce to advance its quantum computing technology, the company announced Tuesday. The news prompted a 4% rise in the company's shares.
The funding is allocated under the CHIPS Research and Development Office, pursuant to the CHIPS Act, and aims to accelerate progress toward commercially viable quantum computing.
Details of the R&D Initiative
According to the announcement, the funds will support three specific research and development projects designed to overcome technical challenges in scaling superconducting quantum computing. Rigetti's wholly owned subsidiary, Rigetti & Co, LLC, will pursue projects focused on:
- Compressing readout electronics into an integrated, miniaturized package.
- Significantly expanding cryogenic capacity using a new cryostat architecture.
- Developing fabrication capabilities for high-connectivity chip architectures.
AdThese initiatives are central to the company's roadmap for building utility-scale quantum computers, which have potential applications in cryptography, materials science, and artificial intelligence.
Strategic Importance and Company Outlook
Company leadership emphasized the agreement's role in strengthening the domestic quantum computing ecosystem. "We are proud to be selected by the U.S. government to accelerate R&D and progress against our roadmap to deliver commercially viable quantum computing capabilities," said Dr. Subodh Kulkarni, Rigetti's CEO.
Kulkarni stated that solving these scaling challenges will help reduce the time and cost of building large-scale quantum systems, enabling broader adoption. The company noted that governments worldwide are investing heavily in quantum technology, recognizing its significant national security and economic implications.
