Retail Investors Show Caution on Apple Post-Event, Focus on AI Over Hardware, Says Webull UK CEO

Retail investors met Apple's latest product event with caution rather than excitement, with trading patterns suggesting many took profits ahead of the launch, according to Nick Saunders, chief executive of Webull UK.
Profit-Taking Precedes Product Launch
Instead of a surge in buying activity, Saunders observed a general lack of enthusiasm among retail investors for tech stocks, which was reflected in their approach to Apple's announcements. He told Investing.com that trading activity suggested a defensive posture.
"It looks as though investors had been taking profits ahead of the event, suggesting a reluctance to buy in to hype," Saunders said. This indicates a more measured approach from a segment of the market often associated with momentum trading.
Historical Context and Market Focus
Despite the muted reaction, Saunders cautioned against over-interpreting the immediate investor sentiment. He pointed to a historical pattern where Apple's stock often sees a short-term dip following product reveals before finding its footing.
Ad"I would be cautious about reading too much into this reaction – Apple stock drops 70% of the time following a new product launch with stock often regaining ground in the next month or so," Saunders stated. This historical trend suggests the initial weakness is not always a reliable indicator of the stock's medium-term performance.
AI Strategy Over Hardware
Saunders argued that for many investors, the focus has moved beyond new hardware, such as the foldable iPhone Duo. He asserted that the market is now far more interested in the tech giant's artificial intelligence capabilities.
"Hardware does not move markets any more," the Webull UK CEO commented. He identified the rollout of "Apple Intelligence," the company's new version of Siri, as a more critical factor for the stock's long-term trajectory. The key question for investors, he said, is whether the integration of AI and hardware can justify a higher-priced product category and support Apple's valuation.
