Qualcomm Grants Amazon Warrant for $4 Billion Stake in AI Chip Deal

Qualcomm and Amazon have entered a strategic collaboration to develop custom chips for AI data centers, a deal that includes a warrant for Amazon to purchase up to $4 billion in Qualcomm stock. The announcement, reported by Reuters on Tuesday, sent the chipmaker's shares soaring in early trading.
Deal Details
According to a regulatory filing, Qualcomm has issued a warrant to Amazon that is directly linked to the volume of business conducted under the partnership, which could reach up to $60 billion.
The warrant gives Amazon the right to purchase Qualcomm shares at an exercise price of $161.26 per share. This structure provides a significant incentive for Amazon to deepen its hardware collaboration with the San Diego-based company.
Strategic Focus on AI Infrastructure
The partnership will concentrate on developing semiconductors for AI inference, the process of running trained artificial intelligence models. This is a rapidly expanding and highly competitive segment of the chip market as cloud providers seek more efficient and powerful custom hardware.
Key technological goals of the collaboration include:
Ad- Developing custom chips optimized for AI workloads in data centers.
- Creating high-speed optical connectivity technologies, with solutions extending to 1.6 terabits per second to meet growing bandwidth demands.
As part of the agreement, Qualcomm also plans to expand its use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its own chip design processes, aiming to shorten development cycles.
Market Reaction
Investors reacted positively to the news, with shares of Qualcomm (QCOM) jumping more than 7% in early trading on Tuesday. The rally provides a significant boost for the company, whose stock had been down approximately 1% year-to-date amid concerns over weaker global smartphone demand.
This deal signals a major push by Qualcomm to diversify its revenue streams beyond its core mobile business and establish a stronger foothold in the lucrative AI data center market.
