ProMIS Neurosciences Stock Surges on Positive Alzheimer's Drug Safety Data

Summary
Shares of the biopharmaceutical company jumped after interim Phase 1b trial data for its Alzheimer's candidate, PMN310, revealed zero cases of a key side effect, brain swelling, boosting investor confidence.
ProMIS Neurosciences (PMN) stock surged 16.1% in pre-market trading after the company released positive interim safety data from a trial of its lead Alzheimer's disease candidate, PMN310. The results notably showed zero cases of brain swelling, a significant and feared side effect associated with other treatments in the class.
Key Trial Results
The clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company unveiled the six-month blinded safety and biomarker results from its PRECISE-AD Phase 1b trial during a webinar. The data from 136 patients was highly encouraging, particularly regarding safety.
Key findings include:
- Zero cases of amyloid-related imaging abnormalities-edema (ARIA-E), a form of brain swelling that has been a major challenge for competing Alzheimer's immunotherapies.
- The total incidence of ARIA was just 4.4%, consisting entirely of mild, asymptomatic microhemorrhages.
- No treatment-related serious adverse events or drug-related discontinuations were reported.
AdThe positive safety profile was observed across a genetically diverse patient group, including high-risk individuals. According to the company, 61% of participants were APOE4 carriers, with 11% being homozygotes, a subgroup more susceptible to ARIA-E.
Market Reaction and Analyst Outlook
The news triggered a strong positive reaction from investors, sending the stock to $13.61 in pre-open trading from its prior close of $11.72. The move was entirely company-specific, running counter to a mixed broader market where the tech-heavy Nasdaq was trading lower.
Adding to the bullish sentiment, investment bank Chardan initiated coverage on ProMIS the previous day with a Buy rating and a $20.00 price target. This follows recent Buy or Overweight ratings from other firms, including H.C. Wainwright, Roth Capital, and Cantor Fitzgerald, indicating a growing positive consensus among analysts.
