Pound Sterling Gains as UK GDP Beats Forecasts, Dollar Rally Pauses

Summary

The British pound advanced against the U.S. dollar after official data showed the UK economy grew faster than expected in the second quarter, while the dollar's recent surge took a breather ahead of key U.S. economic reports.

Background

The British pound strengthened on Wednesday, buoyed by better-than-expected UK economic growth data and a temporary pause in the U.S. dollar's recent rally. The GBP/USD pair climbed 0.31% to trade at $1.3271 as of 5:20 AM ET, according to market data.

UK Economy Shows Resilience

Data released by the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) provided the main catalyst for sterling's advance. The report showed the British economy expanded by 0.5% in the second quarter, surpassing analyst expectations of a 0.4% increase. The growth was primarily driven by the services sector and exports, the ONS noted.

However, the data also indicated that UK government borrowing as a percentage of GDP rose to 5.2% from 4.2%. Despite the day's gains, the pound remains significantly below its 52-week high of $1.3869.

Dollar Pauses Ahead of Key US Data

The U.S. dollar's upward momentum stalled as investors await crucial inflation and employment figures later in the day. The market is closely watching the upcoming U.S. ADP employment report and the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge.

According to Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING, a strong jobs report combined with a core PCE reading of 0.4% month-over-month could revive expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in October. "It is perhaps too early" to call a top in the dollar's recent rally, Pesole stated, noting that rising long-term bond yields continue to support the U.S. currency. ING's base case remains for the next Fed rate increase to occur in December.

Political Commentary in Focus

Separately, political commentary regarding the UK's relationship with the European Union drew attention. Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, told BBC Radio 4 that rejoining the EU is an option being considered and that the current Brexit deal has caused "more harm than good."

The source material did not establish a direct link between these political remarks and the pound's performance on Wednesday. The currency's movement was primarily attributed to the economic data and the broader dynamics of the U.S. dollar.
