Portugal's PSI Index Falls 1% as Energy and Utility Stocks Tumble

Summary
Portugal's benchmark stock index, the PSI, closed down 1.01% on Monday, weighed down by significant losses in heavyweight energy and utility companies amid a sharp decline in global oil prices.
Portugal's benchmark stock index, the PSI, ended Monday's trading session down 1.01%, according to exchange data from Lisbon. The decline was primarily driven by sector-specific weakness, with significant losses posted in the utilities, financials, and consumer goods sectors.
Heavyweights Drag on Lisbon Exchange
The index's performance was heavily influenced by some of its largest components. Energy firm Galp Energia was the session's worst performer, while utility giants EDP and EDP Renovaveis also posted notable declines.
- Worst Performers:
- Galp Energia (ELI:GALP) fell 3.25% to close at 19.38.
- EDP Renovaveis (ELI:EDPR) declined 2.81% to 13.82.
- EDP Energias de Portugal (ELI:EDP) was down 2.17%, ending the day at 4.50.
On the other side of the ledger, a few companies bucked the negative trend. Construction firm Teixeira Duarte led the gainers, followed by telecom operator Nos SGPS.
Ad- Best Performers:
- Teixeira Duarte (ELI:TDSA) rose 2.57% to 0.50.
- Nos SGPS SA (ELI:NOS) added 1.82% to finish at 4.81.
- The Navigator Company (ELI:NVGR) gained 1.21%, closing at 3.17.
Market Breadth and Commodity Pressure
Despite the index's fall, market breadth on the Lisbon Stock Exchange was evenly split, with 13 stocks advancing and 13 declining, while four remained unchanged. This indicates that the session's losses were concentrated in larger, more heavily-weighted companies rather than a broad-based market sell-off.
The sharp drop in Galp Energia's shares coincided with a significant downturn in the global energy market. Brent crude futures for October delivery plunged 5.67% to $86.48 a barrel, while WTI crude for September delivery fell an even steeper 6.81% to $83.23 a barrel. In contrast, gold futures saw a modest gain of 0.33%.
