Background

Poland's benchmark WIG30 index surged 1.62% on Tuesday to close at a new all-time high, propelled by significant gains in the basic materials, banking, and oil and gas sectors. The rally in Warsaw coincided with broader strength in global commodity markets, according to data from Investing.com.

Sector Leaders Propel Market

The advance was led by strong performances from some of the index's largest constituents. The session's top performer was copper and silver producer KGHM Polska Miedz SA (WA:KGH), which saw its shares climb 4.43%.

Other notable gainers included brokerage firm X Trade Brokers Dom Maklerski SA (WA:XTB), which added 3.09%, and convenience store operator Zabka Group SA (WA:ZAB), which rose 2.98%. Both XTB and Zabka Group also saw their individual share prices reach new all-time highs during Tuesday's trade.

Mixed Breadth Despite Index High

Despite the strong performance of the headline index, the broader market sentiment on the Warsaw Stock Exchange was more divided. Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones by a margin of 271 to 255, with 105 issues ending the session unchanged. This suggests the day's gains were concentrated in larger-capitalization stocks.

The session's laggards on the WIG30 included medical technology company Synektik (WA:SNTP), which fell 1.82%. It was joined in negative territory by media group Cyfrowy Polsat SA (WA:CPS), down 0.97%, and benefits provider Benefit Systems SA (WA:BFT), which declined by 0.84%.

Commodity and Currency Context

The positive performance in Warsaw was supported by a strong day for commodities, which are a key driver for several WIG30 components. Crude oil futures for September delivery rose 2.33% to $84.40 a barrel, while the international benchmark Brent crude gained 2.32% to $91.29 a barrel.

In the currency markets, the Polish zloty remained relatively stable against its major trading partners. The EUR/PLN and USD/PLN pairs were both reported as largely unchanged at the close of trading.
