Background

Poland's benchmark WIG30 index closed up 0.15% on Monday, reaching a new all-time high in a mixed trading session. The gains were primarily driven by strength in the energy, chemicals, and information technology sectors, according to closing data from the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

Session Highlights

Despite the index's record close, market breadth was negative, with 301 stocks declining compared to 247 advancers, while 102 issues ended the session unchanged. This suggests the advance was led by a handful of large-capitalization companies rather than broad market momentum.

The session's top performers on the WIG30 included:

  • Jastrzebska Spotka Weglowa SA (JSW): surged 5.10% to close at 26.40.
  • Orange Polska SA (OPL): added 3.18% to finish at 14.60.
  • Polski Koncern Naftowy ORLEN SA (PKN): gained 2.92%, ending the day at 144.00.

Conversely, the main laggards included e-commerce firm MODIVO SA (MDVP), which fell 1.51%, and copper producer KGHM Polska Miedz SA (KGH), down 1.13%.

Commodity and Currency Markets

The move in Polish equities coincided with a significant rally in energy markets. Crude oil futures for August delivery jumped 4.48% to $74.61 a barrel, while Brent oil for September delivery rose 4.39%.

In foreign exchange, the Polish zloty weakened modestly. The EUR/PLN currency pair was up 0.20% to 4.33, and the USD/PLN rose 0.34% to 3.80.
