Plus500 Shares Tumble on Profit Warning and Margin Squeeze

Background

Shares in Plus500 (LSE:PLUS) fell sharply on Monday, dropping by as much as 11.1%, after the online trading platform issued a disappointing first-half trading update that flagged shrinking profit margins and a weaker outlook for the full year.

H1 Update Reveals Margin Pressure

For the first half of 2026, Plus500 reported that revenue grew 12% year-over-year to $462.9 million, a three-year high for the period. However, underlying EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) rose by just 1% to $187.5 million.

This discrepancy was driven by a significant compression in profitability. According to the company's update, the underlying EBITDA margin contracted to 41% from 45% in the same period last year. The firm attributed the lower margin to increased spending on customer acquisition and investment in its U.S. business expansion.

Guidance Downgrade Triggers Sell-Off

The most significant catalyst for the stock's decline was a reversal in the company's full-year guidance. In an April update, Plus500 had guided that full-year revenue and EBITDA would come in *ahead* of market consensus. Monday's announcement walked back that forecast, with the company now expecting results merely *in line* with consensus.

Investors interpreted this material downgrade as a signal of a more challenging operating environment in the second half of the year. The update also showed that new customer additions in the second quarter fell below the level seen in Q2 of the prior year, suggesting a loss of momentum.

Market Context

The sell-off was exacerbated by a cautious tone across the broader market, with the FTSE 100 trading lower amid geopolitical tensions. This risk-off sentiment provided little support for Plus500, which was already under pressure from its company-specific news. The stock traded as low as 4,263.96 pence during the session, a sharp pullback from its 52-week high of 5,185 pence.
