Physical Intelligence in Talks for $1 Billion Funding at $20 Billion Valuation, Bloomberg Reports

Robotics AI startup Physical Intelligence is in early discussions to raise at least $1 billion in new capital, a financing round that would value the company at roughly $20 billion, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter. The potential deal highlights continued investor enthusiasm for foundational AI models aimed at controlling physical systems.
The Proposed Transaction
The funding talks, which could see existing backers Lux Capital and Avenir lead the round, would represent a significant step-up in valuation for the pre-revenue company. Physical Intelligence was valued at $11.5 billion in a funding round earlier this year.
The startup has attracted a roster of high-profile investors, including Alphabet Inc.’s CapitalG, Thrive Capital, and Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos. According to the report, investor interest was catalyzed by the company's decision earlier this month to release beta access of its latest robotics models to external developers for fine-tuning.
Strategy and Technology
Founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers and academics from Stanford University and UC Berkeley, Physical Intelligence is developing a hardware-agnostic AI platform. The goal is to create a universal operating system for a wide variety of robotic hardware.
AdRecent job listings suggest the firm is training its AI models on a range of routine physical tasks, such as bagging items, sorting dishes, and installing light bulbs. The company's strategy appears focused on establishing its platform as a dominant layer in the robotics software stack before competitors can entrench their own ecosystems.
Market Context
The potential funding round comes as venture capital increasingly targets "embodied AI," a field focused on enabling AI to interact with the physical world. Advances in multimodal AI systems are creating new pathways for automating complex, real-world tasks.
Physical Intelligence faces a competitive landscape that includes major technology firms like OpenAI and Tesla Inc., which are also pursuing robotics initiatives. The startup also competes with specialized peers such as Skild AI, which reportedly achieved a $14 billion valuation in January and has surpassed $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
