Philip Morris Stock Rises After Company Lifts Q3 Profit Forecast

Shares of Philip Morris International (PM) rose on Tuesday after the tobacco giant issued an updated third-quarter earnings forecast that surpassed analyst expectations, signaling continued financial momentum even as the broader market declined.
Upgraded Profit Outlook
Philip Morris announced it now projects third-quarter 2026 earnings per share (EPS) to be in the range of $2.29 to $2.34. This revised guidance is notably above the Wall Street consensus estimate of $2.25 per share. The company attributed the upward revision to a one-cent favorable currency impact, reversing a previously anticipated headwind.
In afternoon trading, the company's stock was up 2.1%, reaching an intraday high of $192.45. The move stood in sharp contrast to the wider market, with the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq Composite all trading lower for the session.
Building on Full-Year Confidence
The Q3 update follows a similar revision to the company's full-year outlook. At the Barclays Global Consumer Conference on September 8, CEO Jacek Olczak raised the full-year 2026 reported diluted EPS forecast. This was driven by a more favorable foreign exchange environment, which is now expected to provide a tailwind of approximately $0.24 per share, up from a prior estimate of $0.15.
AdKey full-year 2026 projections include:
- Adjusted diluted EPS of $8.35 to $8.50, representing 10.7% to 12.7% growth over 2025.
- The forecast for underlying organic growth remains unchanged at 7.5% to 9.5%.
Market Analysis
Philip Morris's outperformance highlights its appeal as a defensive consumer-staples stock for investors seeking shelter from broader market volatility. The company's ongoing transition to smoke-free products, such as its ZYN nicotine pouches and IQOS heated tobacco devices, continues to be a central part of its growth narrative.
Analysts have responded positively to the consistent upgrades, with consensus price targets reportedly rising toward the $205–$225 range. The combination of strong guidance, currency tailwinds, and a resilient business model allowed the stock to act as a relative safe haven for investors on Tuesday.
