Background

OpenAI has introduced a new Data agent feature for its enterprise-focused ChatGPT Work platform, designed to allow employees to analyze company data and create visualizations through conversational prompts. The tool aims to democratize data analytics by removing the need for users to write complex queries or master specialized business intelligence (BI) software.

Key Features and Integrations

The Data agent connects to a range of approved corporate data sources, using natural language processing to interpret user requests and generate analysis. According to the announcement, the system integrates with major data platforms, including:

  • Amazon Redshift
  • Databricks
  • Google BigQuery
  • MongoDB
  • Snowflake
  • Datadog
  • ClickHouse

The tool can also access documents from Google Drive and SharePoint. A significant feature is its ability to build, edit, and share interactive dashboards directly or work with existing BI platforms such as Tableau, Power BI, Oracle BI, and ThoughtSpot. Findings can be distributed via Slack or email.

Enterprise Controls and Security

To address corporate governance and security concerns, the Data agent provides administrators with control over data connections and user permissions. Access is managed by role, and all queries run using the connected account's existing security settings. OpenAI specified that these permissions are enforced at the table, row, and column levels, ensuring users can only access data they are already authorized to see.

Market Context and Early Adoption

This launch places OpenAI in more direct competition with established BI vendors and other technology giants embedding generative AI into analytics workflows. The company reported significant internal use, stating that nearly all of its product team and over two-thirds of its go-to-market organization use the tool for internal analysis.

Companies including NTT Data, Thermo Fisher, and ServicePiston participated in an alpha program. Early use cases involved analyzing sales and spending, identifying reporting errors, and evaluating business opportunities, demonstrating the tool's potential to accelerate data-driven decision-making.
