OpenAI Targets Legal Sector With Specialized 'Astra for Law' AI Model

Summary
OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a new foundation model built on GPT-6 specifically for legal research and workflows. The product features a massive legal database and enhanced performance benchmarks, along with enterprise-grade privacy controls to drive adoption in the legal industry.
OpenAI announced on Thursday the launch of Astra for Law, a new artificial intelligence foundation model tailored for the legal sector. The product, built upon the company's latest GPT-6 Astra model, aims to provide law firms and legal technology companies with specialized research tools and enhanced data privacy controls.
Specialized Legal AI
Astra for Law integrates OpenAI's most recent model with a comprehensive legal search index covering more than 230 million URLs of U.S. legal documents. This repository includes case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions.
To build this specialized dataset, OpenAI partnered with the Free Law Project to incorporate its CourtListener case-law collection. The company states this collection covers more than 99.9% of published U.S. precedential case law, providing a vast and authoritative foundation for legal queries.
Enhanced Research Performance
According to performance metrics released by OpenAI, the specialized model demonstrates a significant improvement in accuracy for legal research tasks. On a private validation set from Vals AI’s Legal Research Bench, Astra for Law passed overall correctness checks on 54.0% of questions, compared to 38.7% for the standard GPT-6 Astra model using web search.
AdFor case-law specific questions, the new model showed superior retrieval capabilities:
- It found 24% more reference cases than the standard GPT-6 Astra.
- It retrieved up to 54% more relevant passages from correct court opinions.
Enterprise Adoption and Integration
OpenAI is rolling out Astra for Law with a focus on enterprise needs, initially offering it to select law firms through a "Trusted Access" program in ChatGPT and Codex. The model will soon be available through the API as `gpt-6-astra-law`.
Key enterprise features include Zero Data Retention on the API for eligible firms and the exclusion of ChatGPT Enterprise usage from human review by default. OpenAI is collaborating with prominent law firms such as Latham & Watkins, Sullivan & Cromwell, and Cooley on feature design. The platform will also support API customers like Harvey and Legora and will offer plugins for legal tools including Relativity and Clio.
