OpenAI Releases Agents API in Public Beta for Developers

OpenAI announced on Thursday the public beta release of its Agents API, a new tool designed to give developers access to the core infrastructure that powers products like ChatGPT and Codex through a single API call.
How It Works
The API allows developers to construct and manage cloud-based AI agents by defining a specific task, model, and set of tools within a chosen compute environment. According to OpenAI, the company manages the underlying technical framework, or "harness," while developers retain control over where the agent operates.
Deployment options are flexible, including:
- OpenAI-hosted sandboxes
- A developer's own infrastructure
- Third-party sandbox environments from partners
To support this, OpenAI has partnered with several cloud and infrastructure providers, including Blaxel, Cloudflare, Daytona, DigitalOcean, E2B, Modal, Oracle, Runloop, and Vercel, offering a range of CPU, GPU, and memory configurations.
Key Features and Performance
AdThe Agents API introduces several technical capabilities aimed at building more sophisticated AI applications. These include multi-agent support, which allows a primary agent to delegate subtasks to other agents running in parallel, and automatic context compaction to manage long-running sessions efficiently. It also features tool search to help reduce token consumption.
In a statement provided by OpenAI, Jack Weissenberger, CTO of Ciridae, reported significant performance improvements from using the API. He noted that it increased his company's evaluation score to 0.85 from 0.71 and delivered a 4x latency reduction for its subagent workflows.
Pricing and Availability
OpenAI stated that there are no additional fees for using the Agents API itself. Developers will be billed for token and tool usage at the company's standard rates. The API is based on an open-source version of the Codex harness, which is available for review in OpenAI's public codebase.
The company is now gathering feedback from the developer community during the public beta phase to refine the product before a future general availability release.
