OpenAI Integrates Personal Health Records into ChatGPT for US Users

OpenAI has rolled out a new feature allowing users in the United States to connect their personal health data and medical records directly with its ChatGPT chatbot. The integration, announced Thursday, aims to provide more personalized and context-aware answers to health-related questions on the platform.
Feature Details and Availability
The new capability enables users to link data from Apple Health, as well as medical records from supported US hospital systems, One Medical, and Function Health. According to OpenAI, this allows users to ask the chatbot to perform tasks such as comparing lab results over time, summarizing changes since a doctor's appointment, or analyzing relationships between sleep patterns and daily activity.
OpenAI stated that the feature was developed in response to significant user behavior, noting that more than 300 million people use ChatGPT for health-related questions weekly. The integration is available for logged-in users aged 18 and older in the US on both web and iOS platforms, across all subscription tiers including Free, Go, Plus, and Pro.
Technology and Data Privacy
To power the feature, OpenAI is deploying two different models. Paid subscribers will have access to GPT-5.6 Sol, which the company describes as its most capable model for health-related tasks. Free users will have access to GPT-5.5 Instant. OpenAI reported that it worked with physicians to evaluate the models for accuracy and safety.
AdAddressing significant privacy concerns, OpenAI has put several safeguards in place:
- Users must grant explicit permission before ChatGPT can access any connected health information.
- Connected medical records and Apple Health data are not used to train its foundation models or for ad targeting.
- All conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit, with additional protections for health data.
- Users can disconnect their health information at any time, and synced data will be deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days.
Market Implications
This launch marks a significant strategic move by OpenAI into the highly regulated and sensitive digital health sector. By integrating personal health data, ChatGPT is positioned to become a more powerful and personalized tool for consumers, potentially competing with or complementing established health tech platforms.
The company's explicit focus on user control and data privacy will be critical for building trust among users and navigating the complex regulatory landscape of healthcare information. The success of this feature could pave the way for further AI integration in personal health management and diagnostics, a market with substantial growth potential.
