NuScale Power Stock Surges on Sector-Wide Momentum for SMRs

Shares of NuScale Power (SMR) surged on Tuesday, significantly outperforming a declining broader market as investors renewed their focus on the small modular reactor (SMR) sector. The rally appeared driven by sector-wide momentum rather than any company-specific news.
Defying a Down Market
NuScale Power's stock jumped by approximately 11% in morning trading on September 8, reaching an intraday high of $10.77 per share. According to Investing.com, the move came without any apparent catalyst, such as a corporate press release or a change in analyst ratings.
This gain stood in sharp contrast to the broader U.S. equity market. During the session, the S&P 500 fell by 0.3%, the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.3%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 0.9%, underscoring the specific investor interest in the nuclear energy space.
SMR Sector Sees Renewed Interest
The rally is part of a recurring theme in 2026, where SMR developers have attracted significant investor attention. This enthusiasm is underpinned by powerful long-term demand drivers, including the massive projected energy consumption from AI data centers and broad bipartisan political support for advanced nuclear technologies.
AdOther companies in the sector, such as Oklo (OKLO) and Nano Nuclear Energy (NNE), have also experienced strong rallies this year. Market sentiment for next-generation nuclear power has remained constructive, fueled by industry milestones and a growing pipeline of potential power agreements with the technology sector.
A Catch-Up Trade with Strong Fundamentals
Some market observers view NuScale's performance as a potential "catch-up" trade. The company's stock had touched a 52-week low of $7.21 in July 2026, leaving it at a more discounted valuation compared to its peers entering the session.
Despite being in a pre-revenue stage, NuScale maintains a robust financial position. As of the end of the second quarter of 2026, the company reported approximately $1.89 billion in cash and investments with zero debt. Critically, NuScale holds a key competitive advantage as the first and only company to have its SMR design certified by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
