Numerai Buys Back $1.2 Million in NMR Tokens, Totaling $3.2 Million in a Year

Numerai, the crowdsourced hedge fund, announced Wednesday it has completed a third strategic purchase of its native Numeraire (NMR) token, acquiring an additional $1.2 million from the open market. The move brings the firm's total token repurchases to $3.2 million over the past year.
Buyback Supports Growth
The company stated the buyback is intended to replenish its treasury holdings, which are used to reward data scientists participating in its platform. This latest purchase, like previous ones, was executed over several weeks through Coinbase Institutional to minimize market impact and was completed prior to the announcement.
Numerai's model relies on a network of independent data scientists who stake NMR tokens on their predictive models. Successful predictions are rewarded with more NMR, while poor ones result in the loss of staked tokens. This system powers Numerai’s “Stake-Weighted Meta Model,” which the firm uses for its global equity trading strategies.
Expanding Operations
The repurchase program coincides with a period of significant expansion for the San Francisco-based firm. According to the announcement, Numerai has seen substantial growth since its first buyback in July 2025.
AdKey growth metrics include:
- Assets under management increased to approximately $700 million, up from roughly $560 million at the end of 2025.
- The number of active accounts on the platform has more than doubled over the past year.
- New infrastructure has been introduced, including Numerai Skills and the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
NMR Tokenomics
Numeraire is a fixed-supply token on the Ethereum blockchain, capped at a maximum of 11 million NMR. Because the firm distributes tokens from its treasury for tournament rewards and staking incentives, it periodically replenishes its holdings through these open-market purchases. The company reported that approximately 3.1 million NMR remained in its treasury before this latest buyback.
