Nucor Stock Declines as In-Line Earnings and Cautious Outlook Disappoint Investors

Nucor Corporation (NUE) shares declined in after-hours trading after the steelmaker reported third-quarter results that met analyst estimates but failed to deliver a positive surprise, coupled with a cautious outlook for the fourth quarter. The modest performance was not enough to sustain the stock's recent rally, leading to a classic "buy the rumor, sell the news" investor reaction.
In-Line Results and Cautious Guidance
Nucor posted third-quarter diluted earnings of $5.80 per share on net sales of $11.25 billion, according to its latest financial release. These figures aligned almost exactly with Wall Street consensus forecasts, leaving no room for the upside that investors had priced into the stock ahead of the announcement.
Adding to the muted sentiment, management provided a cautious forecast for the remainder of the year. The company stated it expects fourth-quarter earnings to be "in line with or modestly above" third-quarter levels, a projection seen by the market as underwhelming given the stock's strong performance leading into the report.
High Expectations Met With Profit-Taking
The post-earnings pullback occurred against a backdrop of high investor expectations and a stretched valuation. Ahead of the report, analysts noted that Nucor's trailing price-to-earnings ratio was trading at nearly double its five-year historical median. This, combined with reports of net selling by company insiders over the past year, raised the bar for a positive earnings surprise.
AdThe stock had rallied into the print, with much of the optimism already reflected in its price. For example, Barclays had raised its price target to $306 from $295 ahead of the results, helping lift sentiment during the regular trading session.
Market Reaction
In after-hours trading, Nucor's stock slipped 0.5% to $256 per share. This followed a regular session where the stock had touched a high of $262.86.
The broader market provided little direction, with major indices like the S&P 500 trading nearly flat, isolating the stock's movement to its company-specific news. The combination of a consensus-matching report, conservative guidance, and elevated pre-earnings positioning prompted investors to take profits.
