Background

Shares of Nucor Corporation (NYSE: NUE) fell 3.7% in after-hours trading on Thursday after the steel producer issued third-quarter earnings guidance that came in below Wall Street estimates.

Guidance Details

Nucor announced it anticipates earnings for the third quarter ending October 3, 2026, to be in the range of $5.55 to $5.65 per diluted share. This forecast falls short of the analyst consensus estimate of $6.20 per share, according to Investing.com.

The company's guidance, while below expectations, represents a significant increase from the $2.63 per diluted share it earned in the third quarter of 2025. It also indicates a sequential improvement from the second quarter of 2026, when Nucor reported net earnings of $5.04 per diluted share.

Segment Performance Outlook

Nucor provided a mixed outlook for its business segments, with strength in finished steel products offset by weakness in raw materials.

Sample IUX Markets – In-articleAd
  • Steel Mills: Earnings are expected to increase, driven by higher average selling prices and stable volumes. However, the company noted these gains will be partially offset by higher costs and the non-recurrence of a $130 million cash refund related to prior raw material costs that was recognized in the second quarter.
  • Steel Products: This segment is projected to see increased earnings due to both higher volumes and improved average realized pricing.
  • Raw Materials: Earnings are expected to decline because of lower pricing and shipments.

Financial Context

The company also noted that its third-quarter results will not include certain one-time benefits seen in the previous quarter. The second quarter included a non-cash, pre-tax benefit of $61 million, or $0.20 per diluted share, from a valuation increase in its investment in fusion energy company Helion.

Despite the weaker-than-expected forecast, Nucor continued to return capital to shareholders. During the third quarter, the company repurchased approximately 2.03 million shares at an average price of $247.04. Year-to-date, Nucor has returned approximately $1.36 billion to stockholders through a combination of share buybacks and dividends.
