Nebius Stock Slides on AI Financing Concerns Voiced by Musk, CEO

Nebius Group NV (NBIS) shares declined 3.9% in pre-open trading on Monday after a high-profile warning about the financial stability of AI data center operators spooked investors. The selloff was triggered by comments from Elon Musk and compounded by a candid admission from Nebius's own chief executive regarding financing challenges.
Dual Catalysts Pressure Stock
The initial pressure came from a post on the social media platform X by Elon Musk, who warned that debt markets have largely ceased financing companies with revenues heavily concentrated in AI data centers. Musk predicted widespread failures and consolidation among so-called "neocloud" providers. His comments were reportedly in response to venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, who had described the sector as disorganized.
Sentiment soured further following remarks from Nebius CEO Arkady Volozh at Nvidia’s GTC Berlin conference. Volozh acknowledged that some funding channels had become "temporarily unavailable," according to Investing.com. While he expressed confidence in the company's overall financial health, the admission lent weight to Musk's broader industry warning, suggesting the credit tightening is already affecting operations.
Sector-Wide Contagion
The market reaction was not isolated to Nebius, indicating a repricing of risk across the entire neocloud sector. The selloff dragged down several of Nebius's peers in pre-market trading, including:
Ad- CoreWeave
- IREN Ltd
- Hut 8
- Riot Platforms
All of these companies saw their shares decline by more than 3%. This synchronized downturn occurred while the broader market was relatively stable, with the Nasdaq only slightly lower and the S&P 500 and Dow Jones largely flat, underscoring that the negative sentiment was concentrated on AI infrastructure stocks.
Investor Jitters Over Growth Model
The day's events have intensified investor scrutiny of the capital-intensive business model of Nebius and other neocloud operators. With the stock trading near $152.55, significantly below its 52-week high of $299.86, investors appear increasingly concerned about the sector's reliance on credit for growth in a potentially tightening financial environment.
