Background

A sharp, simultaneous decline in the stock prices of Tesla and SpaceX has erased more than $47 billion from Elon Musk’s net worth on paper. The downturn, which has pushed both high-profile companies near their 52-week lows, highlights the volatility tied to the billionaire's concentrated holdings.

Tesla Hit by Weak Earnings

Shares in Tesla Inc. (TSLA) plunged 16.1% in a single week, falling from $380.84 to a recent close of $319.69, according to market data. The sell-off wiped approximately $210 billion from the electric vehicle maker's market capitalization.

The slide was triggered by a disappointing second-quarter earnings report. Key figures that missed analyst expectations included:

  • Earnings per share (EPS): Came in at $0.33, well below the forecast $0.49.
  • Free cash flow: Turned negative to the tune of -$1.1 billion as the company increased capital expenditures on artificial intelligence and robotaxi initiatives.

Based on his roughly 13% stake in Tesla, Musk’s paper loss from this weekly decline alone amounts to approximately $27 billion.

SpaceX Under Pressure

Meanwhile, shares of SpaceX (SPCX) have fallen 26.2% over the past month, trading at $115.26, or 14.6% below its initial public offering price. The primary driver of the decline is investor apprehension ahead of a major post-IPO lockup period expiry, which is expected to free up $123 billion in shares to be traded on the open market.

Musk, who owns an estimated 42% of SpaceX, has seen the value of his holding decrease by more than $20 billion over the last month due to the stock's performance.

Market Outlook

The significant paper losses underscore the risk inherent in a personal fortune so heavily leveraged to two high-beta, high-valuation companies. Investor sentiment remains cautious, particularly with Tesla trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 294x amid downward revisions to analyst estimates.

While market speculation about a potential merger between Tesla and SpaceX continues to circulate, such a move would face considerable regulatory and corporate governance challenges. Investors will be closely watching Tesla's next earnings report and the market's reaction to the SpaceX share lockup expiry for further indications of volatility.
