Background

Russia's benchmark stock index surged on Monday, closing at its highest level in a month as strength in the energy and mining sectors propelled the market higher. The MOEX Russia Index gained 3.26% by the close of trade in Moscow, according to data reported by Investing.com.

Sector Strength Drives Rally

The advance was led by strong performance in the Oil & Gas, Power, and Mining sectors. Market breadth on the Moscow Stock Exchange was decisively positive, with 190 stocks advancing compared to just 55 decliners, while 10 issues ended the session unchanged.

Among the day's top individual performers on the index were e-commerce firm OZON (MCX:OZON), which climbed 6.66%, and oil giant Rosneft PJSC (MCX:ROSN), which added 6.34%. Moskovskiy Kreditnyi Bank PAO (MCX:CBOM) also posted a significant gain of 5.10%.

Volatility Spikes Amid Commodity Moves

The equity rally coincided with rising energy prices, as crude oil futures for October delivery gained 1.84% to trade at $101.89 a barrel. In contrast, some major commodity-linked stocks lagged, with gold producer Polyus PJSC (MCX:PLZL) falling 0.68% and mining firm GMK Noril'skiy Nikel' PAO (MCX:GMKN) declining 0.64%.

Investor caution was also evident as the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), a measure of implied volatility in MOEX options, jumped 12.96% to 36.26. A sharp increase in this index suggests traders are pricing in the potential for larger market swings ahead. In the currency markets, the ruble remained stable against the dollar and euro.
