MOEX Russia Index Jumps Nearly 2% on Strength in Mining and Energy Stocks

Summary
Russia's main stock index closed higher on Monday, buoyed by significant gains in the mining and energy sectors, though a concurrent rise in the volatility index pointed to underlying investor caution.
Russian stocks advanced on Monday, with the benchmark MOEX Russia Index closing up 1.99% as gains in the mining, power, and oil and gas sectors propelled the market higher, according to data from Investing.com.
Sector Leaders and Laggards
The rally was broad-based, with rising stocks significantly outnumbering decliners on the Moscow Stock Exchange by 242 to 10. The advance was led by strong performances in the materials and technology sectors.
- Top Performers: Diamond producer AK ALROSA PJSC (ALRS) surged 18.33%, followed by VK Company Ltd (VKCO) which added 15.99%, and conglomerate AFK Sistema PJSC (AFKS), which rose 12.56%.
- Top Decliners: In contrast, pipeline operator Transneft PJSC Pref (TRNF_p) fell sharply by 10.76%. Shares of Sberbank also faced selling pressure, with preferred shares (SBER_p) down 6.80% and common stock (SBER) declining 6.76%.
Volatility Hits 52-Week High
Despite the positive close, a key indicator of market sentiment signaled potential investor unease. The Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures the implied volatility of MOEX options, edged up 0.15% to 53.10, marking a new 52-week high.
AdA rising volatility index alongside a market rally can suggest that while investors are bidding up prices, they may also be bracing for larger price swings or uncertainty in the near future.
Commodities and Currencies
In commodities, crude oil prices were mixed. West Texas Intermediate for September delivery rose 0.78% to $82.42 a barrel, while the Brent oil contract for September delivery slipped 0.12% to $88.85 a barrel.
In currency markets, the Russian ruble held steady against major currencies at the close. The USD/RUB pair was unchanged at 78.73, and the EUR/RUB was also flat at 89.71.
