Russia's MOEX Russia Index advanced 0.65% to close higher on Monday, lifted by strong performance in the country's dominant oil and gas sector. Gains in power and manufacturing shares also contributed to the positive finish, according to market data from the Moscow Exchange.

Energy Sector Leads Gains

The rally was spearheaded by major energy producers. Shares in natural gas company NOVATEK PJSC (NVTK) surged 5.97%, while oil giant Rosneft PJSC (ROSN) climbed 5.64%. Tatneft PJSC (TATN_p) also posted a solid gain of 3.66%.

The advance in energy equities coincided with a sharp rise in crude oil prices. The August contract for crude oil jumped 9.23% to settle at $78.00 a barrel, providing a significant tailwind for the sector.

Divergent Performance and Key Laggards

Despite the headline gain, market breadth showed a more mixed picture, with 132 stocks rising compared to 107 declining. Several prominent companies faced significant selling pressure, hitting multi-year lows.

Market Volatility and Currencies

Investor sentiment appeared to calm as the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures implied volatility in MOEX options, fell by 6.54% to 43.00. In the currency markets, the USD/RUB and EUR/RUB pairs were reported as unchanged. Meanwhile, the U.S. Dollar Index Futures, which tracks the greenback against a basket of other currencies, rose 0.32%.
