MOEX Russia Index Gains 0.46% as Energy Stocks Rally

The MOEX Russia Index closed 0.46% higher on Tuesday, buoyed by a significant rally in the nation's dominant oil and gas sector. The advance occurred even as the broader market showed signs of weakness, with declining stocks outnumbering advancers.
Energy Sector Leads Gains
Strength in the Oil & Gas, Manufacturing, and Telecoms sectors propelled the benchmark index higher, according to data from the Moscow Exchange. Leading the charge were major energy producers, with shares of TATNEFT (MCX:TATN) surging 3.83% and Surgutneftegas (MCX:SNGS) adding 3.34%.
On the downside, steel producer Magnitogorskiy Metallurgicheskiy Kombinat (MCX:MAGN) was among the session's worst performers, falling 2.75%. Other notable laggards included retailer Magnit (MCX:MGNT), which dropped 2.01%, and utility company ROSSETI (MCX:FEES), down 2.04%.
Market Internals and Volatility
Despite the index's positive finish, market breadth was negative. On the Moscow Stock Exchange, 136 stocks fell while only 107 advanced, with 12 ending the session unchanged. This dynamic suggests that the day's gains were concentrated in a handful of large-capitalization stocks, particularly within the energy complex.
AdInvestor sentiment showed a slight increase in caution, as the Russian Volatility Index (RVI) rose 0.65% to 37.34. The RVI, which measures the implied volatility of MOEX index options, is often viewed as a gauge of market uncertainty.
Commodity Markets Provide Tailwind
The rally in Russian energy stocks coincided with a sharp increase in global oil prices. Crude oil for October delivery jumped 3.03% to $94.25 a barrel, providing a significant tailwind for the sector. Brent crude for November delivery also edged higher.
In currency markets, the USD/RUB and EUR/RUB pairs were reported as unchanged at 85.85 and 99.79, respectively. Meanwhile, gold futures for December delivery traded lower, falling 1.71%.
