MOEX Russia Index Ends Flat at 3-Year Low Amid Broad Market Sell-Off

Summary
Russia's benchmark stock index closed unchanged but reached a new three-year low, as declining stocks in the materials and financial sectors significantly outnumbered advancers.
Russia's benchmark MOEX Index finished Saturday's session unchanged, a figure that belies a broader market decline which pushed the index to a new three-year low. The flat close masked significant underlying weakness, as falling stocks substantially outnumbered rising ones on the Moscow Stock Exchange.
Market Internals Reveal Weakness
The market's performance was characterized by notable pressure on key sectors. Data from the close showed 157 stocks fell while only 69 advanced, with 18 ending the session unchanged. This negative market breadth indicates widespread selling pressure despite the headline index's flat performance.
Several major companies hit multi-year lows, leading the declines:
- Polyus PJSC (PLZL): The gold producer's shares plunged 4.92% to a 5-year low.
- AFK Sistema PJSC (AFKS): The conglomerate fell 1.84%, also hitting a 5-year low.
- Bank VTB PJSC (VTBR): The state-owned bank dropped 0.96% to an all-time low.
In contrast, a few companies bucked the trend. Moskovskiy Kreditnyi Bank (CBOM) was a top performer, rising 2.35%, while oil producer Tatneft (TATN) gained 0.56%.
AdVolatility and Currency Headwinds
Investor sentiment appeared cautious, as reflected in the Russian Volatility Index (RVI). The RVI, which measures the implied volatility of MOEX options, was unchanged at 46.01 but held at a six-month high, signaling heightened market uncertainty.
Adding to the headwinds, the Russian ruble weakened against major currencies. The USD/RUB pair climbed 1.10% to 77.00, while the EUR/RUB pair rose 0.95% to 87.88.
Softer Commodity Prices
Pressure on Russian equities was accompanied by a downturn in key commodity markets, a crucial driver for the Russian economy. Crude oil prices softened, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for August delivery falling 0.93% to $71.41 per barrel and the September Brent contract declining 0.38% to $76.01 per barrel. Gold futures for August delivery also traded lower, falling 0.65%.
