Background

The MOEX Russia Index concluded Friday's trading session down 1.14%, as a downturn in the pivotal mining, oil and gas, and power sectors weighed on the broader market.

Session in Review

At the close of trading in Moscow, declining stocks significantly outnumbered advancers on the Moscow Stock Exchange by a margin of 182 to 57, with 16 issues ending unchanged, according to exchange data. The broad-based selling pressure reflected widespread weakness across several of Russia's core industries.

Despite the index's fall, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures the implied volatility of MOEX options, dropped 10.79% to 32.09, a new one-month low. A fall in volatility can suggest that, despite the day's losses, investor anxiety about future price swings may be decreasing.

Sector and Stock Movers

The technology and telecommunications sectors saw some of the steepest declines. Key underperformers included:

In the currency market, the Russian ruble weakened against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/RUB pair rising 0.64% to 84.48.
