MOEX Russia Index Closes Higher, Led by Energy Sector Gains

Russia's benchmark MOEX Index edged up 0.24% to close higher on Thursday, buoyed by strong performance in the nation's energy sector. The gains in heavyweight oil and gas stocks managed to lift the overall index, even as a majority of individual stocks on the Moscow Exchange ended the day in negative territory.
Sector and Stock Performance
The advance was primarily led by gains in the Oil & Gas, Manufacturing, and Telecoms sectors, according to market data. The session's top-performing stocks on the MOEX were dominated by energy giants:
- LUKOIL PJSC (LKOH) rose 2.58%.
- TATNEFT (TATN) gained 2.29%.
- Rosneft PJSC (ROSN) was up 1.63%.
However, the rally was not broad-based. Declining stocks significantly outnumbered advancing ones on the Moscow Stock Exchange by a margin of 192 to 59, with 2 issues ending unchanged. The session's worst performers included diamond miner AK ALROSA PJSC (ALRS), which fell 7.13%, and gold producer Polyus PJSC (PLZL), which declined 5.90%.
AdBroader Market Context
Supporting the energy sector, crude oil prices saw gains. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for September delivery rose 3.78% to $86.80 a barrel, while the Brent oil contract for September delivery increased 0.18% to trade at $100.72 a barrel. In contrast, gold futures for August delivery were down 2.40%.
In currency markets, the USD/RUB and EUR/RUB pairs were reported as unchanged at 79.24 and 89.09, respectively. Meanwhile, an indicator of market sentiment, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures the implied volatility of MOEX options, decreased by 1.38% to 49.18, suggesting a slight easing of expected market turbulence.
