MOEX Russia Index Closes Flat at Three-Year Low Amid Mixed Trading

Russia's primary stock market benchmark, the MOEX Russia Index, finished Sunday's trading session unchanged, closing at a new three-year low. The flat performance masked a day of mixed results across different sectors, while a key volatility metric held at a six-month high, signaling continued investor uncertainty.
A Market of Contrasts
Despite the headline index showing a 0.00% change, market breadth was narrowly positive. According to closing data from the Moscow Stock Exchange, rising stocks outnumbered declining ones by 120 to 110, with 17 issues ending the day unchanged.
Reflecting underlying market anxiety, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures the implied volatility of MOEX options, also closed unchanged but remained at 46.01, a six-month high. Elevated volatility typically indicates investor concern about future market direction.
Sector and Stock Movers
The session saw a clear divergence between sectors. Energy and financial companies were among the top performers, while materials stocks lagged.
Ad- Top Gainers: Moskovskiy Kreditnyi Bank (MCX:CBOM) led the advancers, climbing 2.62%. Major oil producers also posted strong gains, with Rosneft (MCX:ROSN) adding 2.50% and Tatneft (MCX:TATN_p) rising 2.11%.
- Top Losers: On the downside, gold miner Polyus (MCX:PLZL) was the worst performer, falling 3.07%. It was joined by conglomerate AFK Sistema (MCX:AFKS), which declined 0.60%, and real estate developer PIK (MCX:PIKK), down 0.33%.
Ruble Weakens as Commodities Slip
The Russian ruble lost ground against major currencies. The USD/RUB pair rose 1.10% to 77.00, while the EUR/RUB pair climbed 0.95% to 87.88.
This currency weakness occurred alongside a downturn in key commodity markets. Crude oil prices fell, with the August WTI contract declining 0.93% to $71.41 a barrel and the September Brent contract down 0.38% to $76.01 a barrel. Gold futures for August delivery also traded lower.
