Despite the flat performance of the benchmark index, market sentiment was negative. On the Moscow Exchange, 142 stocks fell while only 86 advanced, with 18 issues remaining unchanged.

Key decliners weighing on the market included:

  • NOVATEK PJSC (MCX:NVTK), which fell 0.98%.
  • Severstal PJSC (MCX:CHMF), down 0.92%.
  • AK ALROSA PJSC (MCX:ALRS), which lost 0.87%.

Bucking the trend were a few notable gainers, including telecommunications firm Rostelekom PJSC (MCX:RTKM), which rose 0.41%, and utility company RusHydro PJSC (MCX:HYDR), up 0.38%.

Commodity and Currency Markets

The weakness in energy and materials stocks coincided with a pullback in global oil prices. WTI crude futures for October delivery fell 2.34%, while November Brent crude contracts declined 1.56%. In contrast, December gold futures edged up 0.37%.

In currency markets, the Russian ruble showed modest strength against major currencies. The USD/RUB pair edged down 0.11%, while the EUR/RUB pair declined 0.27%. Meanwhile, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), a key measure of market volatility, was unchanged at 33.97.
