MOEX Russia Index Closes 0.40% Lower on Weakness in Energy and Mining Stocks

Russian stocks ended Wednesday's session in negative territory, with the benchmark MOEX Russia Index falling 0.40%. The decline was primarily driven by losses in the country's key energy and mining sectors, according to closing data from the Moscow Exchange.
Sector Weakness Drives Decline
The downturn was broad-based, with decliners outnumbering advancers by a margin of 190 to 55, while 10 stocks finished the session unchanged. The Power, Mining, and Oil & Gas industries were the primary sources of the negative pressure on the main index.
Among the session's most significant laggards were:
- AK ALROSA PJSC (MCX:ALRS), a major diamond producer, which saw its shares fall 3.64%.
- NOVATEK PJSC (MCX:NVTK), a natural gas company, which declined 2.64%.
- Transneft PJSC Pref (MCX:TRNF_p), an oil pipeline operator, which was also down 2.64%.
Pockets of Strength and Volatility
AdDespite the broader market weakness, several companies posted notable gains. Moskovskiy Kreditnyi Bank PAO (MCX:CBOM) was the top performer on the index, rising 3.47%. Other gainers included telecom firm Mobil’nye Telesistemy PJSC (MCX:MTSS), which added 0.66%.
In a potentially contradictory signal, the Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which measures the implied volatility of MOEX Russia Index options, decreased by 1.74% to 36.69. A drop in this index can sometimes suggest lower investor anxiety about future market swings.
Broader Market Context
The slump in Russian equities occurred even as key commodity prices moved higher, a divergence that can signal specific domestic or sector-level concerns for investors. Crude oil for October delivery rose sharply by 3.91% to $96.67 a barrel, while the November Brent contract ticked up to $101.67 a barrel. Gold futures also saw a modest increase.
In the foreign exchange market, the USD/RUB and EUR/RUB pairs were reported as unchanged at 85.48 and 98.95, respectively, at the time of the market close.
